The notion that ‘the world is your oyster’ historically implies that life can be hard, but if you keep at it, it will give you rich rewards. Although it is a saying most often applied to young people embarking on life as an adult, it is also apropos to those who most commonly are transitioning from the demands of a Monday through Friday work schedule and a life orbiting around raising kids.
The perfect time to pause from the so-called ‘grind’ is now. Rather than being a victim of change, caught like a deer in the headlights, why not take a moment to deliberately retreat and consider that anything is possible for you in your future?
Statistically speaking, people today are living longer, healthier lives than their forefathers. So, chances are that your parent’s did not necessarily set an example of what the possibility of life after retirement looks like. If this is not true for you, then you have a distinct advantage because you can follow in mom and dad’s footsteps if you want. If you, however, are the pioneer of a new era of longevity, than the choices you make now not only stand to enable you to be healthy, happy, productive and fulfilled but will undoubtedly be an inspiration and an example to your kids, grandkids, and all young one’s in your life.
Schedule time alone to let the inner creator in you tug at your heart strings. Take a moment to dream and think of how you want to feel; to imagine what you want to do with your time; to consider the contribution you want to make and the legacy you want to leave. Spend time away from the everyday routine with your spouse or partner and share ideas about your future. You also could organize a retreat with friends to exchange thoughts about what you want your life to be. Anything is possible.
